There is no universally right answer here — only the right answer for your child, your budget, and your working life. The case for each option is real. What follows is the version of this page we wish every family read before touring a single center or interviewing a single caregiver.
The case for nanny care
- You choose the person. The single adult who will influence your child's day, every day, is someone you selected, screened, and trust — not whoever is assigned to the toddler room this year.
- Individual attention. One caregiver can nurture your child's physical, intellectual, emotional, and social development without dividing attention across a classroom. Routines bend to your child's temperament rather than the other way around.
- Your home, your routines. Naps happen in their own crib; sick days don't upend the household; there is no morning scramble to pack and drop off.
- Fewer illnesses. Children in home care are simply exposed to fewer circulating infections than children in large group settings — any parent who has survived a center's first winter knows exactly what this is worth.
- A long-term bond. A nanny who stays for years becomes a beloved, stable figure in a child's early life — many families count a former nanny as family decades later.
- Logistical sanity for multiple children. One nanny for two or three children often costs less than two or three center enrollments, while removing every pickup and dropoff from your day.
The honest case for day care
- Built-in socialization. Group care delivers daily peer interaction, turn-taking, and pre-school structure without any extra planning — a genuine developmental asset, especially after age two or three.
- Licensing and oversight. Centers are licensed, inspected, and staffed in ratios set by state regulators. With a nanny, you are the oversight — which is why the screening process in our hiring guide matters so much.
- Reliability. A center does not catch the flu or take another job. When a nanny is sick or resigns, your childcare is down until you solve it; centers come with redundancy built in.
- Predictable cost. Tuition is a known number. A nanny is a household payroll with taxes, raises, and paid time off — manageable, but a real employer relationship (see the pay & tax FAQ).
- Lower cost for one child. For a single infant or toddler in most markets, quality group care costs meaningfully less than a full-time professional nanny.
The hybrid paths families actually take
Real households mix and match more than the either/or framing suggests: a nanny for the infant years followed by preschool at three; a nanny share between two families to split costs while keeping one-on-one care; part-time group care for socialization plus afternoon in-home care; an au pair or live-in arrangement for travel-heavy seasons of life. Questions that decide it
- How does your child respond to groups — energized, or overwhelmed? At what age would that change?
- What does your backup plan look like the morning your one caregiver is sick? The week she gives notice?
- What is your true all-in budget — including the nanny taxes on one side, and the second-child tuition on the other?
- How much do mornings cost you? (Commute-plus-dropoff is a tax on every working day.)
- Does anyone in the household have health considerations that make illness exposure a deciding factor?
